FAQ

Common Questions Googled by Clients

Why is my basement leaking?

Basements can leak from various entry points. The most common being doors, windows and other openings. Basements can also leak at the ”cove joint“ where the basement floor slab meets the foundation wall. Basements can leak at the sill plate outside where the siding meets the foundation. Basements can leak through the wall entering through a crack, gas line, water line or other opening. Our technicians can put together a plan to address any problem water is causing to your home.

Do I need to install a sump pump?

The Outdoor Pros only recommends installing an interior sump pump and drain tile if all exterior drainage conditions have been properly assessed and corrected. Drainage problems are caused from exterior conditions in most cases. If water is still entering the cove joint after all exterior improvements have been made then a sump pump is the only viable solution.

How to install a French drain?

There are many opinions online about how to install a French drain system. We install the highest quality drains on the market using (2-3) drainage pipes in every single trench! We use washed Meramec River gravel. We use commercial grade permeable geotextile filter fabric. We use NDS drainage products which are the most dependable on the market and we order direct from various suppliers.

Is corrugated piping good for drainage?

Yes! Perforated Corrugated piping is good for drainage but only when buried deep below surface roots and protected by fabric and gravel.

Why is my yard not draining?

The most common reasons for a yard to not drain are poor grading and heavy clay soils. Poor grade can trap water in areas. Heavy clay soils do not allow the water to percolate through the ground. This traps the water in the thin layer of surface topsoil which becomes saturated.

Do I need vents on my downspout extensions?

Yes! Having vents on downspout extensions can prevent freezing pipes, help with future maintenance and allow air for maximum water flow through drainage piping.

Why does my sump pump keep running?

Your sump pump keeps running because your home was built on a high water table, close to a spring, close to an aquifer or recent structural developments in your neighborhood have changed groundwater and stormwater flow. The earth is moving and changing under us at all times. Your pump may also be running more frequently than normal if EXTERIOR drainage conditions around the perimeter of your home have changed. Check for pooling water near the foundation, spilling over gutters and leaking downspouts.

How high can a retaining wall be built before requiring an engineer?

In most municipalities, any retaining wall over 4 feet in total height (including the buried base course) requires stamped engineering plans and local building permits. For walls under 4 feet, we build strictly to manufacturer specs using compacted aggregate base foundations, gravel backfill, geogrid soil reinforcement, and integrated drainage pipes to prevent wall blowouts.

Why is my retaining wall leaning forward?

Retaining wall failure is almost always caused by trapped water and improper fabric, gravel and/or drainage pipe installation. We use the correct installation methods along with commercial Geogrid and geotextile fabrics to ensure the longevity of our retaining walls.
